ETF Inflows Face Treasury Yield Test as $183 Billion Auction Looms
A recent surge in crypto ETF inflows of $1.61 billion over four days has investors wondering if it will withstand an impending U.S. Treasury yield spike.
The influx, which began on August 17 and reached its peak on August 20, saw daily net inflows of $297.5 million, $189.3 million, $517.2 million, and $606.3 million, respectively. BlackRock's IBIT supplied $503 million of the final day's total.
The Treasury yield spike is driven by a 30-year U.S. Treasury note auction on August 20, which offered investors a real yield of 2.973%, a 50 basis point increase from its original issue in February. The auction saw improved bid-to-cover and indirect bidders received 84.4% of accepted competitive awards.
The upcoming $183 billion two-, five-, and seven-year Treasury note auctions, scheduled for August 25-27, will test the resilience of the regulated demand channel for Bitcoin. If the ETF inflows remain firm while the long real yield holds around 2.97%, it may be a sign that the regulated demand channel can absorb fresh Treasury supply.
