ETH Demand Shifts, Not Shrinks, With Ethereum's Frame Transactions Upgrade

Ethereum's upcoming upgrade, Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), has sparked concerns that it will weaken demand for ETH. However, according to Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Core Developers, this is not the case.

The protocol layer will still receive ETH as gas payment, but users can now pay fees with stablecoins like USDC instead of holding ETH in their wallets.

This change shifts demand from retail pockets to institutional vaults, where wallet operators and Paymaster service providers hold large amounts of ETH for on-chain payments. This is not a reduction in demand, but rather a change in the distribution structure.

Proponents argue that this upgrade will increase user adoption by eliminating the friction point of buying ETH for gas payment. They also predict that stablecoin issuers will benefit from increased usage and exchange flows between stablecoins and ETH.
