ETH Exchanges Run Dry Amid Surging Prices and Unprecedented Investor Behavior

Exchanges that hold Ethereum (ETH) have seen their reserves dwindle by an unprecedented 18% since June, even as prices surged by 27% to reach $2,528. This trend defies conventional market logic, where holders typically transfer assets to cold wallets during price downturns.

According to data from Santiment, the pace of outflows accelerated directly during the rally period. In fact, since August 16, Ethereum's market value has increased by approximately 27%, yet another 275,000 coins have left trading platforms.

This divergence in trends is attributed to a fundamental difference between Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum investors' goals. BTC holders maintain their assets on exchanges to quickly react to trades, whereas ETH investors prioritize transferring their coins directly into staking protocols, which offer native yield within the network. This has led to an increase in staked ETH, with the share exceeding 35%.

The scarcity of ETH tokens could potentially push prices higher more quickly due to increased buying pressure. However, Ethereum remains trapped within a broad range, requiring buyers to secure a firm hold above $2,600 to break the bearish trend.
