ETH Surges Past $2,600 on CPI-Driven Market Rally
Ethereum's price surged past $2,600 on September 11 as the cryptocurrency market rallied in response to new U.S. Consumer Price Index data. The CPI report matched economists' projections, leading to a broader market rally and an increase in ETH prices.
ETH rose over 6.5% in less than an hour to hit a multi-month high of $2,663 before gradually retreating and eventually finding support above $2,500. This sudden spike was accompanied by $215 million in short liquidations on Bitstamp, with ETH accounting for approximately 40% of the total $758 million in liquidated positions over 24 hours.
Analysts view holding the $2,500 support level as key to reaching target projections near $2,950. The current sentiment is optimistic but watchful, with some traders highlighting the aggressive squeeze on short positions and others noting that ETH's quick retracement down toward $2,500, $2,530 showed resistance near $2,650.
The surge in ETH prices trimmed its year-to-date losses to 15%, raising prospects that the cryptocurrency could finish 2026 in the green. The gains also outperformed other high-cap altcoins and some market analysts are now speculating about an 'ETH season' or altcoin rotation.
