ETH Whales Reduce Balances by 1.7M Amid Staking Surge

Ethereum's largest holders have been quietly reducing their ETH balances over the past three months. Wallets holding more than 1,000 ETH shed approximately 1.7 million ETH between May 20 and August 20, according to data from Santiment.

This represents a decline of about 2.9% in holdings across the whale tier. However, most of this ETH didn't hit the open market; instead, it flowed into staking contracts, smart contracts, bridges, and exchanges, suggesting a strategic repositioning rather than a mass liquidation event.

The majority of the 1.7 million ETH that left whale wallets was deposited into staking contracts and other off-market destinations, with only about 300,000 ETH being transferred to smaller wallet categories.
