Ether.fi CEO Wagers $1 Million on EIP-8363 Centralization Consequences
On August 7, 2026, Mike Silagadze, CEO of liquid restaking protocol ether.fi, placed a $1 million bet that EIP-8363 will increase network concentration among validators if adopted.
EIP-8363, titled 'Tapered Issuance Burn,' was submitted on August 4, 2026. It partially burns validator rewards at a rate that scales with the total amount of ETH staked across the network.
According to Silagadze, solo stakers and smaller node operators have real capital costs, which will erode their incentive to participate in staking if yields get compressed by a tapered burn. In contrast, large custodians like Coinbase and Binance operate under different economics, holding massive pools of customer ETH that they can deploy for staking at effectively zero marginal cost.
Stani Kulechov, CEO of Aave, has also raised concerns about EIP-8363's downstream effects on DeFi collateral markets. He argues that compressing the yield generated by liquid staking tokens like stETH and eETH could undermine the economic foundation of a significant portion of DeFi.
The community response has been overwhelmingly against EIP-8363, with 99.77% of validators opposing it in a recent poll conducted by the Ethereum Validators Association.
