ether.fi Ditches Restaking Model Amid Shrinking Sector
ether.fi has announced that it will remove all restaking exposure from its flagship token weETH, effectively ending its bundled staking and restaking model. The change comes after ether.fi's staking arm, which holds $3.3 billion according to DefiLlama, reached a peak of $12.43 billion in August 2025.
The protocol will now offer two separate tokens: weETH for basic staking exposure and weETHs for additional restaking exposure. The latter token is built on Symbiotic and has a supply of 9,136 tokens worth roughly $18 million, about half a percent of the protocol's staking base.
In an interview, ether.fi CEO Mike Silagadze expressed sadness over the change, stating that it marked 'the end of an era.' He also hinted at the potential for restaking to return in some form, but acknowledged that it was perhaps too early for its current model.
The separation is expected to provide a clearer choice for holders between basic staking and additional restaking exposure. For new users, the split aims to make the EtherFi stack easier to understand.
