Ether.fi Dumps Restaking Exposure, Weighs In on Future of EigenLayer
Ether.fi, a prominent liquid staking protocol, has removed restaking exposure from its flagship asset weETH. This move comes as part of ether.fi's shift towards becoming a plain liquid staking token. The protocol is now confining restaking to weETHs, a separate token built on Symbiotic.
This change marks the end of an era for ether.fi, which had bundled Ethereum staking yield with EigenLayer restaking exposure inside a single token. The arrangement was a key factor in the protocol's rapid growth through 2024. With this separation, holders who want restaking must opt into weETHs.
Ether.fi's staking arm currently holds $3.3 billion in assets, making it the largest liquid restaking protocol and third-largest across liquid staking and restaking behind Lido and Binance staked ETH. The onchain wind-down of restaking exposure began before the announcement, with ether.fi's documentation stating that less than 1% of its assets remain restaked with EigenLayer as of August 2026.
