Ether.fi Splits WeETH Product, Makes Restaking Risk Optional
Ether.fi, one of the largest staking platforms in the cryptocurrency world, has made a significant change to its flagship product weETH. The protocol has split weETH into two separate products, allowing users to choose between basic Ethereum staking rewards and higher returns with additional risks.
The restaking feature, which accounted for approximately $3.55 billion in customer assets, is now optional. WeETH will only earn basic Ethereum staking rewards, while users who wish to take on higher returns must opt for a new token, weETHs.
This structural change gives investors more control over their risk management strategies. Previously, weETH holders had to accept the complex risks associated with restaking, whether they wanted to or not. Now, users can freely choose between safe staking and high-risk restaking.
The move coincides with a period of intense debate regarding reward mechanisms on the Ethereum network. The Ethereum Foundation has proposed a plan that would halt rewards once half of the total Ethereum amount on the network is locked. However, Ether.fi founder Mike Silagadze strongly opposes this proposal, arguing it would push small investors out of the system and weaken staking-based products.
