Ether.fi Volatility Spikes Amid Ethereum Staking Reward Cut Proposal and Business Model Shift

A recent cluster of negative and mixed catalysts has triggered volatility in Ether.fi (ETHFI), causing its price to drop by around 4-5% over a 48-hour period. One major factor contributing to this volatility is Ethereum's proposed EIP-8363, which aims to reduce validator rewards as staking participation rises. According to the proposal, net consensus yield would decrease from about 2.6% to roughly 1.2% over 18 months by burning more validator issuance as staked ETH grows.

This change directly threatens the economics of liquid staking and restaking protocols, including Ether.fi, which monetizes staking and restaking flows. Critics like Aave founder Stani Kulechov and ether.fi CEO Mike Silagadze argue that this would centralize staking and harm DeFi protocols and home validators.

In addition to the EIP-8363 proposal, Ether.fi implemented a major structural change to its core product by removing restaking exposure from its main liquid staking token weETH. This change has reshaped Ether.fi's business model, allowing users to choose between simple ETH staking and higher-risk restaking yields.

Investors are re-underwriting Ether.fi's growth story, as the protocol's revenue strength is being scrutinized for its disconnect from what actually accrues to ETHFI token holders. While Ether.fi has captured around $223 million in annualized fees and $51 million in annualized revenue, only a tiny fraction of this revenue, around $30,000, was distributed to ETHFI holders via buybacks.
