Ether Surges as Dollar Weakens in Debasement Trade
On August 19, Ethereum and silver both saw unexpected price movements in what some are calling a 'debasement trade.' Ether surged by 17.5% to $2,253, while silver rose 2.79% to $65.83.
The catalyst for this move was the US Treasury's announcement that it would double its maximum liquidity-support buybacks for 10-to-30-year securities from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation. The change will take effect from September 9 through November 4.
Despite the Treasury's claim that these purchases are not monetary financing, but rather a form of liquidity support, markets reacted negatively and the dollar index rose. However, Ethereum continued its rally, potentially due to institutional demand - US spot Ether ETFs attracted over $1.41 billion in nine consecutive positive sessions through August 27.
Meanwhile, silver's price is influenced by industrial demand, substitution, and mine supply, which has led to persistent volatility.
