Ethereum AI Agents to Automate DeFi Processes, Boost Transaction Activity
Ethereum's AI-powered agents are poised to transform how applications work on the network. Currently, users must manually interact with wallets, navigate interfaces, and approve transactions for every step in a decentralized finance (DeFi) process.
AI agents, however, can automate these tasks by allowing software to directly interact with smart contracts, hold assets, and execute transactions under predefined rules. This model could increase transaction activity significantly while also raising new risks involving permissions, malicious instructions, and incorrect decisions.
The Ethereum Foundation has already been using AI internally to test protocol code and identify vulnerabilities, including a remotely triggerable issue later disclosed as CVE-2026-34219.
x402 is another key development that supports automated machine-to-machine payments on Ethereum and Layer 2 networks. This standard uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status to enable software payment for APIs, data, and services.
