Ethereum Blob Fees Skyrocket Past Pre-Pectra Levels

The Ethereum network's blob market has seen a significant shift in its fee floor, reaching an average of 2.3 gwei in September. This exceeds the post-Dencun baseline and marks a departure from the near-zero fees that previously prevailed.

Before the Pectra upgrade in May 2025, which increased the target to 6 blobs and the maximum to 9 blobs, fees sat near 1 wei. However, with the new minimum price for blobs matching the actual verification cost, the previous era of low fees has come to an end.

Despite the increase in purchasing after Pectra, the average number of blobs per block remains 33% below the new target of 6. At the target rate, the network sells 5.45GB of space per day. Blobs were 86% full on average post-Pectra.

The rise in Ethereum layer 1 fees also contributed to keeping costs elevated, with the L1 base fee increasing more than 650% week-over-week after Pectra activation.
