Ethereum Buckles Market Downturn as Fundstrat Co-Founder Touts AI-Powered Financial Plumbing
Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat and chair of BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), claims Ethereum is becoming the settlement layer for Wall Street and artificial intelligence. This argument echoes his bullish outlook on cryptocurrencies for the next 12 months.
In a recent exchange on X, a trader asked why Ethereum was holding up better than most major coins during a broader crypto pullback. Lee attributed this to Ethereum's emerging role as financial plumbing, which he ties to two forces: Wall Street's tokenization of traditional assets and the rise of agentic AI.
Agentic AI refers to autonomous software that can transact without human input. Lee has also pointed to the recent ETH/BTC ratio breakout as evidence the market is pricing in this shift. BitMine has backed his thesis with purchases, holding a 5% ether stake, which is currently underwater on a cost basis.
Ethereum was among the few top-ten assets to trade higher over the past seven days, with Tron (TRX) being the only other gainer. Bitcoin (BTC), BNB, XRP, Solana (SOL), Zcash (ZEC), and Hyperliquid (HYPE) all posted weekly losses.
