Ethereum Community Divided Over Proposal to Burn Staking Rewards
A proposal titled EIP-8363 has sparked intense debate in the Ethereum community. The proposal, dubbed 'Tapered Issuance Burn,' suggests that as the staked ETH approaches half of the total supply, issuance rewards earned by validators should be gradually burned until they reach zero.
This would effectively reduce the returns from staking ETH, undermining the business models of treasury companies and staking pools. The proposal has been met with resistance from some in the community, with Aave founder Stani Kulechov describing it as one of the most resisted proposals in Ethereum's history.
Supporters argue that a sufficient reward is enough, and more than that becomes a burden. They claim that the current issuance mechanism carries risks, including concentration of wealth and power among large institutions. By introducing a gradual burn mechanism, they aim to strengthen ETH's long-term scarcity narrative and control inflation.
