Ethereum Community Divided Over Tapered Issuance Burn Proposal

Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, has expressed concerns over EIP-8361, a proposal that could introduce unpredictability in validator rewards. This, according to Kulechov, may deter institutional interest in Ethereum and undermine borrowing strategies on platforms like Aave.

EIP-8361 proposes a 'tapered issuance burn' mechanism, which would gradually increase the share of consensus layer validator rewards burned as Ethereum's staking ratio climbs. The end goal is to achieve 100% burn, resulting in zero net issuance from staking once total staked ETH reaches approximately 60.25 million.

The current staking ratio sits at around 34.4%, with projections suggesting it could reach 55% by early 2028 if current incentive structures remain in place. The transition period for EIP-8361 would span roughly 18 months, giving the ecosystem time to adjust.

Kulechov's critique highlights a fundamental disagreement within Ethereum regarding staking yields and decentralization. While some researchers see unchecked staking growth as a threat to network health, others view staking yield as a foundational primitive that shouldn't be subject to periodic redesign.
