Ethereum Core Developers Lock in Stablecoin Gas Fee Proposal
Ethereum's core developers have locked EIP-8141, also known as Frame Transactions, into the network's 2027 Hegóta upgrade. This proposal aims to allow users to pay Ethereum gas fees using stablecoins instead of ETH.
Under the current system, a single Ethereum transaction bundles authorization, fee payment, and execution into one signed action. EIP-8141 would restructure how transactions work by splitting them into distinct steps, making it possible to pay gas bills in something other than ETH.
This change is expected to improve user experience by eliminating the need for users to hold ETH in their wallets just to send stablecoins. The feature will also enable sponsored transactions and batching of actions, where several operations run together as one atomic sequence.
Client teams may begin implementation work on EIP-8141 in late 2026, but a full mainnet rollout is not expected until 2027. Before shipping, every client must implement the code, test it, get wallet support, and clear security review.
