Ethereum Delayed: Hegotá Pushed Back to 2027 Amid Glamsterdam Slip
The Ethereum Foundation has delayed its next major upgrade, Hegotá, from 2026 to 2027 due to the pushback of Glamsterdam. The original target for Glamsterdam was the first half of 2026, but it is now scheduled to activate in the fourth quarter of this year.
Developers have launched a public testnet, Platåberget, for Glamsterdam on August 13, which will run for several months before moving to longer-lived testnets ahead of mainnet activation. The testnet will provide a stable environment to catch problems before the upgrade reaches mainnet.
Hegotá is now targeted for 2027, and developers are narrowing down the list of 66 proposals for the upgrade. Frame Transactions, EIP-8141, is one of the proposals drawing attention, as it would allow an account to define how a transaction is approved, executed, and paid for.
The proposal has been tied to privacy applications, and combined with two companion proposals, Keyed Nonces (EIP-8250) and Recent Roots (EIP-8272), could enable privacy pools where the pool itself can pay fees without relying on a third-party relayer. However, Ethlabs, an independent Ethereum research lab, has recommended rejecting two specific proposals for this cycle.
