Ethereum Demand Shifts to On-Chain Activity as Staking Surges
The Ethereum ecosystem is undergoing a significant shift in demand, moving away from speculative trading on exchanges and towards on-chain activity such as staking and decentralized finance (DeFi).
According to recent data, exchange outflows and staking by whale investors are increasing, while the DeFi lending market shows signs of recovery. This has led to a decline in ether held on exchanges.
New smart contract deployments on Ethereum rose in the second quarter of 2026, with more than 500,000 contracts deployed in the final week of July. Lower gas fees are seen as supporting this increase in activity. As of late July, the number of entities deploying contracts rose to 14,900.
Whale investors have been leading the move to shift ether off exchanges, with one recent example involving a whale withdrawing 112,000 ETH and sending it to the Beacon Chain staking contract. BitMine has also staked 150,120 ETH, locking up more than 87 percent of its treasury holdings.
