Ethereum Developers Bolster Blockchain Security Against Quantum Threats

Ethereum developers are taking steps to safeguard the blockchain from potential quantum computer attacks. Powerful quantum computers could potentially compromise blockchains and drain digital wallets, posing a significant threat to cryptocurrencies like Ethereum (CRYPTO: $ETH) and Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC).

The researchers and developers are targeting the deposit contract, which is the entry point for users to lock up their Ethereum on the blockchain. To enhance security, they plan to add a switch to prevent the network from accepting its current signature format, thus adding an extra layer of protection.

Roughly 42.4 million Ethereum is currently staked on the blockchain network, valued at approximately $104 billion U.S. at current prices. This substantial amount of money is at risk in case of a future quantum attack.

The urgency surrounding quantum computer threats stems from Alphabet's (NASDAQ: $GOOGL) Quantum artificial intelligence (A.I.) research report issued earlier this year. The report identified five potential paths for quantum attacks against Ethereum, putting over $100 billion U.S. worth of assets at risk across wallets, staking, and smart contracts.

The Ethereum Foundation is working towards implementing security changes to the network by 2029 to prevent quantum computer attacks.
