Ethereum Developers Prepare for Quantum Computing Threat with Staking Overhaul
Ethereum developers are taking steps to prepare for the threat of quantum computing by proposing an overhaul of the validator staking deposit contract.
The draft Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) would expand the maximum size of validator public keys from 48 bytes to as much as 8,192 bytes, laying the groundwork for applying quantum-resistant cryptography to the staking system in the future.
This change is aimed at allowing the staking system to support quantum-resistant cryptographic technologies, which require larger keys than the current setup. The proposal also includes a feature that would permanently halt new deposits under the current BLS signature scheme.
The specific quantum-resistant signature method has not been decided and will be addressed in a separate EIP later. The current proposal remains a draft under review.
