Ethereum Developers Propose Radical Change to Staking Policy
A new proposal called EIP-8361 has been submitted to change Ethereum's ETH issuance policy. The proposal, put forward by Justin Drake and other developers, suggests reducing rewards given to validators as more ETH is staked.
The mechanism, known as 'Incremental Supply Burning,' would deduct a portion of validators' theoretical task rewards and burn it during each epoch. This percentage would increase from 0% to 100%, in parallel with the amount of ETH staked.
Proponents argue that excessively high staking rates could introduce risks, such as taxes on nominal staking yields and thinning of supply, which could make individual validators the first group to exit the system. This could lead to a concentration of staked ETH in custody companies and large staking providers, weakening Ethereum's decentralized structure.
The proposal aims to eliminate the economic incentive for staking more ETH after a certain point, limit ETH issuance, and preserve Ethereum's monetary neutrality.
