Ethereum Developers Rush to Shield Staked Ether from $104 Billion Quantum Threat
Ethereum developers are racing to protect $104 billion in staked Ether from potential quantum attacks. The current BLS signature format, used by validators, is vulnerable to powerful enough quantum computers running Shor's algorithm.
A proposal has been put forward to rebuild the validator deposit contract and allow for future quantum-resistant signature types. This would change the existing deposit contract, which hard-codes the size of BLS keys, preventing Ethereum from accepting a quantum-resistant signature even if developers agree on one today.
The push to act on quantum security is prompted by a Google Quantum AI research report that mapped five quantum attack paths against Ethereum and identified over $100 billion in assets at potential risk. The Ethereum Foundation is targeting 2029 for the core protocol changes needed to fully address the quantum threat.
