Ethereum EIP-8141 to Enable Gas Payments Without Holding Ether
Ethereum developers have made significant progress on EIP-8141, also known as Frame Transactions, which is set to be included in the network's 2027 Hegotá upgrade. This proposal aims to remove the need for users to hold ETH (Ethereum's native cryptocurrency) for gas payments.
Currently, Ethereum requires that the account initiating a transaction must hold ether to pay the network fee. However, with EIP-8141, this requirement could be eliminated. The system would separate transaction authorization, gas payment, and execution into programmable frames, allowing an app or another account to cover a user's ETH transaction fee.
This change could enable users to transact with stablecoins without holding ETH, while validators continue receiving network fees in ether. EIP-8141 also introduces programmable validation, which would give accounts more control over what Ethereum recognizes as a valid transaction. This feature could allow for key rotation and different authentication systems without requiring the user to transfer assets to a new address.
