Ethereum EIP-8363 Proposal Sparks Controversy Over Consolidation of Power
A proposal to cap Ethereum's staking ratio at 50% has sparked controversy among developers and users. The 'Tapered Issuance Burn' mechanism, part of EIP-8363, aims to slow down the growth of staked ETH by progressively burning a growing share of consensus-layer issuance rewards as staking approaches certain thresholds.
However, Mike Silagadze, CEO of ether.fi, argues that this would have the opposite effect and consolidate power towards Lido. He has wagered $1 million that EIP-8363 will push staking power toward the largest player in the room rather than distributing it more evenly.
The numbers show that at the time of proposal, Ethereum's staking ratio was around 34%, with approximately 41.5 million ETH staked. Lido's stETH already held a dominant market share of roughly 63%, valued at $28.2 billion.
Silagadze fears that implementing EIP-8363 would lead to small liquid staking tokens exiting and migrating capital to Lido, giving it near-monopoly status.
