Ethereum Embraces Bitcoin-Inspired UTXO Model for Scalability Boost
Ethereum is making significant changes to its architecture in an effort to improve scalability. The project has decided to integrate UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) structures, a concept pioneered by Bitcoin, into its existing account model.
This hybrid approach aims to reduce Ethereum's permanent payment-state storage by 99.8%, shrinking it from over 100 GB to around 300 MB at scale. This should make node operation costs more manageable as network activity grows.
The strategy is part of a broader roadmap targeting 1,000x scaling through execution improvements, data availability, and state management. Innovations like recursive STARKs and Utreexo's compact proofs will be used to maintain decentralization and efficiency.
