Ethereum Emerges as Dominant Force as Altcoin Market Undergoes Radical Shift
The cryptocurrency market has undergone significant changes over the past decade, with many of the top altcoins from 2016 losing relevance or disappearing from the radar. In 2016, projects like Steem, Dash, NEM, and MaidSafeCoin were among the most important in the market.
Fast forward to 2026, and we see that BNB, Solana, Chainlink, and Dogecoin have taken their place. A study by Portal do Bitcoin shows how the altcoin market has been largely rebuilt between 2016 and 2026, with few of the original top performers managing to maintain their relevance.
One notable exception is Ethereum, which has consolidated itself as the second-largest cryptocurrency in the world. Its value has grown from around $803 million in 2016 to over $263 billion in 2026, making it a dominant force in the market.
