Ethereum Exit Queue Hits Record High, 2.65 Million ETH Waiting to Withdraw
The Ethereum validator exit queue reached a record high of 2.65 million ETH on September 12, 2025, due to a massive influx of validators exiting the network following a security precaution taken by an infrastructure provider.
This decision was prompted by the NPM supply chain attack and the SwissBorg breach, which sent approximately $7 billion worth of ETH into the withdrawal process. The queue length currently stands at 46 days, causing significant wait times for institutional liquidity.
Ethereum's high demand for staking is a major contributor to this congestion, with 35 million ETH staked and an attacker needing 11 million ETH to disrupt consensus, a cost exceeding $52 billion at current market prices. The network limits exits to maintain stability but the current backlog requires roughly 45 days to clear completely if no new ETH enters the queue.
The Pectra upgrade aims to reduce wait times during high demand without compromising economic security by dynamically adjusting the exit limit using EIP-7922, which looks back at unused churn from previous generations. The update also includes features such as EIP-7251, which allows validators to increase their maximum effective balance and EIP-6110, which reduces validator deposit processing time.
The withdrawal process involves several stages, including a 256 epoch delay lasting approximately 27.3 hours and a withdrawal sweep that can take up to 10 days depending on pending sweeps in the system. If 75% of the current queue seeks to activate new validators, the activation queue will reach 2 million ETH, adding 129 days to the total process.
