Ethereum Foundation Prepares for Quantum Computing Threat by 2029
The Ethereum Foundation has set a deadline of December 2029 to make the Ethereum network resistant to quantum computing attacks. This target covers all three layers of its infrastructure, including transaction processing, validator security, and data storage.
The Foundation chose this date as a deliberate buffer ahead of estimates that place 'Q-day' (the point at which quantum computers could break public-key encryption) as early as 2030.
Currently, quantum machines are far too limited to attack Ethereum's cryptography. However, the Foundation is taking proactive steps by establishing a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team in January 2026 and planning six sequential hard forks starting with the Hegotá upgrade in late 2026.
