Ethereum Foundation Protocol Cluster Outlines Priorities for Quantum-Resistant L1
The Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster has outlined its priorities and commitments for the next three years. The group aims to make Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) quantum-resistant by December 2029, aligning with targets set by Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft. This goal is non-negotiable until January 2027, when quantum progress will be reassessed.
The cluster has identified two cadences to reach this target: one with an average of 7.2 months per fork, which is quite aggressive, and another with a 12-month cadence that would allow for a minimum viable post-quantum (MV-PQ) L1 milestone by December 2029.
The cluster is working on five multi-fork research arcs: fast finality, post-quantum, privacy, state, and zkEVM. The post-quantum arc focuses on delivering full resistance across execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029. This will require an incredible amount of teamwork within the Protocol cluster and beyond.
The group is planning to treat this self-imposed deadline as non-negotiable at least until January 2027, when quantum progress will be reassessed with the guidance of outside experts.
