Ethereum Foundation Sets Quantum-Resistant Deadline Amid Warning of Potential Cryptography Breakthrough
The Ethereum Foundation has set a December 2029 deadline to make Ethereum quantum-resistant, aiming to secure the network against potential threats from advanced machines. This commitment was published alongside the first unified tier list for 62 upgrade proposals under the Hegota protocol.
The Protocol Cluster, which includes nine internal teams, graded the submissions and rejected 28 proposals outright. They set a deadline covering execution, consensus, and data, meaning the entire base layer rather than one isolated piece. The target is self-imposed, as nobody can predict when a machine capable of breaking elliptic curve cryptography will arrive.
Fredrik Svantes, who leads protocol coordination at the foundation, stated that the cluster is 'aggressively targeting' a quantum-resistant Layer 1 no later than December 2029. Ethereum is not currently quantum-resistant and relies on signature schemes vulnerable to a sufficiently powerful quantum machine.
