Ethereum Foundation Sets Sights on Quantum-Proof Network by 2029
The Ethereum Foundation has set an ambitious deadline to achieve full quantum resistance by December 2029. This target encompasses the execution, consensus, and data layers of the network, essentially all critical infrastructure.
According to current estimates from major tech firms, quantum computers may become powerful enough to break public-key cryptography as early as 2030, prompting the Ethereum Foundation to give itself a three-year runway to rebuild its cryptographic foundations.
The roadmap to achieve this goal involves a series of upgrades, starting with the Hegotá hard fork targeted for late Q4 2026. This is followed by five additional hard forks that must land to reach what the Foundation calls 'L*,' or full quantum readiness.
Roughly 65% of all ETH currently sits in addresses vulnerable to a quantum attack, and the staking layer faces its own exposure with about 42.4 million staked ETH relying on BLS signatures and other cryptographic primitives that quantum computers could compromise.
