Ethereum Frames to Simplify Gas Payments with 2027 Upgrade
Ethereum is taking a significant step towards making gas payments more flexible and user-friendly. The development team has finalized Frame Transactions, or EIP-8141, which will be included in the upcoming Hegotá upgrade scheduled for 2027.
Frame Transactions separate the account authorizing an operation from the account responsible for paying the gas fee, allowing applications or other accounts to cover transaction fees on behalf of users. This change addresses a long-standing usability issue where wallets can contain hundreds of dollars in stablecoins or other tokens but still be unable to move them if they lack ETH to cover network fees.
The proposal also introduces bundled actions and more flexible authorization options, making Ethereum easier to use without requiring every wallet to hold ETH. For example, a payments application could cover the ETH fee itself or deduct stablecoins from a user's balance while settling the network cost in ETH.
