Ethereum Gas Fees Crash to Five-Year Low Amid L2 Boom
Ethereum's gas prices have hit rock bottom, falling to a five-year low. The median fees dropped to 1.9 gwei on August 10th, according to Dune Analytics data.
This significant drop represents a massive 98% decrease from March's year-to-date high of 83.1 gwei. It's the lowest gas price since mid-2019.
The decline in fees is largely attributed to the Dencun upgrade, which introduced data blobs or proto-danksharding. This upgrade aimed to reduce transaction costs for layer-2 blockchains.
Layer-2 networks are becoming increasingly popular as they process more transactions at lower costs by offloading them from the main Ethereum network, but still rely on L1 for validation.
