Ethereum Gas Fees Skyrocket on Tuesday Afternoons
Ethereum gas fees have a predictable weekly pattern that defies intuition. Instead of being higher on Sunday nights, fees are consistently lowest during early morning hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
The peak periods for gas fees occur from Tuesday to Thursday, specifically between 14:00 and 18:00 UTC when North American and European trading desks overlap. During these hours, fees can run three to five times higher than the quietest overnight weekend windows.
This pattern is driven by human traders, with most DeFi trading volume, NFT activity, and smart contract usage concentrated among users in North America and Europe. When these regions' business hours overlap, the Ethereum network experiences a surge in activity, leading to increased competition for block space and higher fees.
Automated systems, such as arbitrage bots and MEV searchers, also play a significant role in shaping gas fees. These bots operate continuously but exploit price divergence more effectively when human trading volume is high.
