Ethereum Gas Prices Plummet to 5-Year Low Amid Layer-2 Boom
Ethereum's gas prices have reached a historic low, plummeting to levels not seen since mid-2019. The median fees dropped to 1.9 gwei on August 10th, marking a staggering 98% drop from March's year-to-date high of 83.1 gwei.
This milestone highlights the growing influence of layer-2 solutions, which are offloading transactions from the main Ethereum network and processing them at lower costs. The Dencun upgrade in March introduced data blobs, or proto-danksharding, aimed at slashing transaction costs for layer-2 blockchains.
Layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum and Taiko are thriving, having processed 97 million transactions in the past month. In contrast, Ethereum's base blockchain handled a mere 109 million transactions over the same period.
