Ethereum Genesis Wallets Wake Up from Dormancy
The Ethereum genesis wallets, which were created in 2014 during the cryptocurrency's initial crowdsale, are slowly waking up from their dormancy. In August 2026, several of these wallets moved large sums of ETH, with one wallet transferring 2,680 ETH worth $5.05 million.
Another wallet, which held 10,000 ETH, moved its funds to a new address on July 30, 2015, after being dormant for over 11 years. This represents a staggering 7,465-fold increase in value from the initial investment of $3,100.
The existence of these massive, inaccessible wealth pockets is striking, with Rain Lohmus, the founder of Estonia's LHV Bank, holding 250,000 ETH worth around $480 million due to lost private keys. A study by KeychainX found that 621 original genesis wallets have never sent a single transaction and hold approximately $2.7 billion in total.
