Ethereum Hits Record Blob Usage Amid Growing Adoption of Layer 2 Solutions
The Ethereum crypto ecosystem has reached a new peak in usage, with a record high of 6.7 blobs per block being averaged daily since September 3, 2026. This milestone indicates growing adoption of layer 2 solutions and validates Ethereum's scalability strategy.
Blobs, introduced by the Dencun upgrade (EIP-4844 standard) in 2024, are cheap temporary storage spaces used by rollups like Arbitrum, Optimism, or Base to publish batches of transactions before validation on Ethereum's main chain.
The current target capacity is set at 14 blobs per block, but the network is operating at only 40-50% of this level. The ceiling for blobs per block is 21, with a fifth increase towards this target being considered. However, funding for client teams remains a bottleneck, according to Trent Van Epps, a former member of the Ethereum Foundation and organizer of Protocol Guild.
