Ethereum Issuance Proposal Sparks Debate Over Staking Incentives
A proposal to reduce annual Ethereum (ETH) issuance to zero near a 50% staking ratio is gaining attention in the community. EIP-8361, submitted by Jerome de Tychey on August 4, suggests tapering annual issuance as staking participation rises.
The chart accompanying the proposal shows current staking at around 33%, with saturation expected to reach 50%. At this point, annual issuance would be reduced to zero. Supporters argue that this change would help reduce excess staking incentives and lower dilution.
However, critics warn that the proposal could weaken ETH's income-generating potential, impact collateral demand, and affect institutional pricing models. Stani Kulechov argued that EIP-8361 would make staking less predictable for institutions and solo operators, while also making rewards uneconomical near the proposed threshold.
The current reward structure for validators is based on effective balance and total active stakers in the system. Validators can also receive priority fees and maximum extractable value, so zero issuance would not automatically remove every revenue source.
