Ethereum L1 and Base Split on Account Abstraction Standards
Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) and Base have parted ways on account abstraction after a joint standards effort collapsed. The split follows weeks of discussions between engineers from both chains, who were unable to agree on a unified framework for account abstraction.
Derek Chiang, an Ethlabs researcher, confirmed that the two chains will now proceed with separate proposals: EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions). Both chains still want gasless transactions and passkey wallets, but their priorities no longer align closely enough for one shared standard.
The main reason for the split is the differing priorities of Ethereum L1 and Base. Ethereum prioritizes censorship resistance and privacy over scalability needs, while Base favors compliance and scalability via EIP-8130 and Tempo Transactions.
