Ethereum L2's Total Locked Value Hits $5 Billion Low
Ethereum L2's total locked value (TVL) has hit a new low of approximately $5 billion in 2023, marking a significant decline from its rapid expansion in 2024.
The surge in TVL last year was largely driven by airdrops and incentives, which have since faded, causing investors to withdraw their funds. As a result, Optimistic Rollups continue to dominate due to their first-mover advantage and ecosystem depth, while Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Rollup adoption remains limited.
The TVL of Ethereum L2 heavily relies on bridged assets and speculative liquidity rather than sustained application demand. The Ethereum Foundation's leadership changes and organizational contraction have also put pressure on ecosystem confidence and development resources, leading funds to prefer returning to the Ethereum mainnet or shifting to other high-narrative tracks.
This pattern is similar to the decline of multi-chain TVL from its peak in 2022-2023. Growth driven by incentives often evaporates quickly during downturns, leaving only organic usage behind. Currently, L2 is still in the 'post-bubble revalidation of product-market fit' stage.
In essence, this is about capital concentration: as speculative liquidity retreats, locked value and attention concentrate on a few L2s with real trading and user bases, shifting pricing power from quantity expansion to quality retention.
