Ethereum Locks In EIP-8141, Paving Way for Sponsored Gas Fees
Ethereum's developers have locked in EIP-8141 for the 2027 Hegotá upgrade, marking a significant step towards making frame transactions a reality. This proposal would allow apps to sponsor gas fees and introduce quantum-resistant key rotation for all wallets.
Holding stablecoins on Ethereum doesn't mean users can spend them immediately, as every transaction requires a fee paid in ETH. However, with EIP-8141, developers aim to fix this issue by separating the payment from execution.
The proposal changes the basic structure of an Ethereum transaction, allowing for up to 64 steps instead of one fixed action. Each step is a standard contract call that handles authorization, identifies who covers the gas cost, and executes the user's intended actions.
EIP-8141 would enable a payments app to cover the fee on behalf of its users or accept stablecoins from them and settle the ETH cost itself behind the scenes. This would mean the end-user never has to buy or hold any ETH to spend their stablecoins.
