Ethereum Nation-States: Grayscale Research Head's Thought Experiment

Grayscale's head of research, Zach Pandl, has been thinking about Ethereum in a new light. He tweeted that the Ethereum network can be viewed as a small nation-state that handles its finances by printing money, rather than collecting taxes.

This concept is called seigniorage, which refers to the profit earned by creating new currency units. In this setup, stakers provide the service of securing the network and are compensated with newly printed ETH tokens.

This unique system brings together fiscal and monetary policy in a way that most economies do not. The act of securing the network also expands the money supply, making it harder to determine the scarcity of ETH for those who view it as a store of value.

The current ETH issuance math is contested, particularly with regards to funding the Ethereum Foundation's core developers. Validators earn around 700,000 ETH per year in staking rewards, but the ecosystem is reportedly short on cash to pay its developers. Some propose taking a portion of validators' rewards to fill this gap, while others argue that issuing less ETH would be a simpler solution.
