Ethereum Poised to Overtake Solana in 2025, Predicts Bitwise CIO
Ethereum and Solana are currently locked in a heated competition for dominance in the altcoin sector. As we approach 2025, opinions differ on which cryptocurrency will emerge as the leader. Solana has recently gained significant attention due to its impressive performance, surpassing Ethereum on several key fronts. In December, it recorded approximately $141 million in application income, compared to Ethereum's $93.56 million. Additionally, Solana's DEX volume achieved a staggering $67.43 billion, outstripping Ethereum's $52.37 billion.
Despite Solana's impressive figures, Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan believes that Ethereum could overtake it by 2025. He points to the implementation of Layer-2 solutions such as Base, Optimism, and Arbitrum, which improve Ethereum's scalability and narrow the gap between institutional trust and daily accessibility. Hougan also highlights Ethereum's rapidly evolving ecosystem, citing successful projects like Clanker and Virtuals on the Ethereum Base network.
Ethereum continues to show resilience, with recent institutional capital inflows of over $850 million in exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This underlines its sustained appeal to investors. The upcoming Petra upgrade is also expected to bring significant improvements in speed and performance. Analysts predict that if ETF sponsorships and institutional interest rise, Ethereum's price could reach $6,000 to $7,000 by 2025.
