Ethereum Prepares for Post-Quantum Future with Deposit Contract Upgrade
Ethereum's deposit contract is set to undergo a significant overhaul as part of its transition to post-quantum cryptography.
A developer proposal aims to redesign the entry point for validators, introducing support for variable-length public keys and credential metadata.
The proposed contract would introduce scheme identifiers, with Scheme 0 reserved for existing BLS deposits to ensure backward compatibility. This shift in design will allow new cryptographic systems to be integrated into the network.
The proposal also removes the legacy Merkle-tree mechanism, instead using execution-layer requests based on EIP-7685 to simplify the deposit process for staking services and solo validators.
