Ethereum Prepares for Quantum Computing Threat with 2029 Roadmap
Ethereum developers are taking steps to prepare for a potential threat from quantum computers, which could potentially break current cryptographic protections. However, this is not an immediate concern.
The Ethereum Foundation has a dedicated post-quantum team and has developed a roadmap that targets approximately 2029 for core post-quantum infrastructure.
The roadmap introduces upgrades gradually, starting with post-quantum key registry for validators in Milestone I and introducing post-quantum signature-verification precompiles in Milestone J. Later milestones target post-quantum attestations, real-time consensus proofs, signature aggregation, and quantum-safe blob commitments.
The Ethereum Foundation is also funding research on post-quantum cryptography and has established the Poseidon Prize to incentivize improvements to hash-based cryptographic primitives.
