Ethereum Prepares for Quantum Threat with BLS Key Switch Proposal
A group of Ethereum researchers has proposed a solution to protect the network from potential quantum-computing enabled attacks.
The proposal targets the deposit contract, which allows users to lock up ether and qualify as validators. It seeks to add a switch that would prevent the network from accepting a specific signature format.
This format is currently used by Ethereum, but it hard-codes the size of the cryptographic key pairs known as BLS keys. This makes it difficult for the network to adapt to a quantum-resistant signature if one were developed in the future.
The proposal also plans to retire the old deposit-processing system and transfer deposits onto a newer framework that already handles withdrawals and validator changes.
