Ethereum Prepares for Quantum Threats by Upgrading Staking Infrastructure
Ethereum researchers are working on an early change to the network's staking infrastructure as concerns grow over future quantum computing risks. The proposed upgrade focuses on the validator deposit contract, which would allow for multiple cryptographic systems and eventually phase out BLS signatures.
The draft proposal aims to reduce exposure to potential quantum attacks on validator keys, which currently secure about 42.4 million Ether ($104 billion) in staked ETH. This is a critical point in Ethereum's longer-term security planning for its staking system.
The Ethereum Foundation targets core quantum-resistant upgrades by around 2029, with this redesign marking an initial measure in broader security adaptation. The proposed change would add flexibility to the deposit contract and allow deposits to be tagged to show which cryptographic system they use.
