Ethereum Prepares for Quantum Threats with Proposed Deposit Contract Update

A proposal has been submitted to update Ethereum's deposit contract to prepare for the potential threat of quantum computers. The contract currently uses BLS (Blind Signature) signatures, but these may become vulnerable in a post-quantum world.

The proposed new contract would allow multiple cryptographic key formats and temporarily retain compatibility with current BLS signatures. An irreversible mechanism would then block new BLS deposits.

This change aims to give Ethereum flexibility and prepare for the future adoption of post-quantum signatures, which may be necessary due to increasing computational power.
