Ethereum Price Faces Crucial Test at $2,436 as Momentum Engine Stalls
Ethereum's price has stalled at $2,474, and its momentum engine is showing signs of complete stagnation. The MACD histogram, a key indicator of market momentum, has printed exactly zero, which is often seen as a signal that the market is due for a sharp directional resolution.
The RSI (Relative Strength Index) is sitting at 61, indicating that buyers have not yet capitulated and there's still room to push higher. However, the Stochastic %K is sputtering rather than firing, suggesting that the market is struggling to gain traction.
Derivatives data is also pointing towards a potential short squeeze or liquidation cascade. The taker buy/sell ratio at 0.70 indicates that sellers are generating more aggressive initiated flow, and spot volume at $721M is unremarkable. Open interest has barely budged, and the funding rate is telling us that nobody is paying a premium to hold longs in perpetuals.
The positioning split between retail and smart money traders is also concerning. Retail is 73% long, while smart money top traders are only 61.5% long. This imbalance can lead to either a painful liquidation cascade or a violent short squeeze.
